Why I am just hearing about this? My heart goes out to the Vandross family.

Mary Ida Vandross, mother of R&B legend Luther Vandross, died last week of natural causes. 

She was 82.

Mary Ida outlived all four of her children, as well as her only grandchild.

No additional information was immediately available.

Luther Vandross died from a stroke in 2005 at the age of 54.

Following her son’s death, Mary Ida spoke to Access Hollywood about losing Luther.

“I miss him tremendously as he was the last of my four children to pass away,” she told Access Hollywood. “You knew him as such a big, strong person and to see him brought down from diabetes to a weakling — it’s almost unbearable.”

Do you remember your first experience with alcohol?

I was at Grambling State, and the fashion club had an after party. There was a drinking game-I did a shot of Everclear. Next thing I remember was being back at my dorm on the bathroom floor. My girlfriends said I was singing. I didn’t even know I was a singer at that point. [Everclear is one helluva drink, had a similar experience with EC while at USM, never again -C.]

So Everclear was the start of your career?

Yes. Everclear made everything clear.

If we drug-tested you, what would we find?

Wheatgrass. Green juice. Zionic bacteria, like chlorophyll and spirulina. I’m drug-free, alcohol-free. Isn’t that boring? Maybe I should be Kid Rock for a day.
